I flew in Business Class on Austrian Airlines. From London to Vienna. The flight was typical of business class within Europe. The seat was the same as economy, with an empty middle seat. However, there was lots I liked about the flight!
Austrian Airlines is an airline that has an excellent reputation amongst travel bloggers. I’m happy to say that the reputation is well deserved.
I booked the tickets at a great price. £750 for four people. The food was really good, the alcohol was complimentary and the crew were friendly. A great way to spend 2 hours of my life.
I definitely enjoyed the flight and look forward to flying again with Austrian Airlines. This is a detailed review, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. Each photo can be clicked, to open out the full slideshow.

I booked business class for four people. Two adults, one child and one infant. From London to Vienna return.
I got a great price. I paid £750 for all four of us. To be honest, £750 wouldn’t have been a bad price for an economy ticket.
For my £750, my family received a lot:
I booked the seat nine months in advance, which probably helped with the price. In general, the earlier you book, the less you’ll pay.
Austrian Airlines have an excellent low fare finder page. You can see the lowest business class fare to each destination. Right now, the lowest business class fare from London to Brussels is listed at £225/return.
I was in seat 3C. My wife and two kids were in seats 3D and 3F. On the other side of the aisle. In Austrian Business Class, the middle seat is kept empty. 3E in this case.
My son was booked on an infant ticket, so he didn’t have a seat assigned for himself. However, seat 3E was empty. So he was able to sit in it. The infant ticket only cost £30.
This is a pretty good trick. If we’d been flying in economy, the infant seat would still have cost £30. But my son would have had to sit on my lap. For him to have his own seat, I would have had to purchase an extra seat for him. At a cost of £150.
The Austrian Airlines business seat is one of the modern airline seats. Super thin, with little padding. Airlines have seats like this to increase the number of seats in an aircraft.
For my two hour flight, the seat was fine for me. To be honest, all airlines have seats like this these days.
In terms of features, the seat was pretty good. It had a recline button. There was also a USB charger at each seat.
The business class cabin was made up of 6 rows. There were four people on each row. So 24 people were in the business cabin. A high number. The flight was fully booked. There was a curtain separating economy class from business class.
The lavatory at the front was exclusively for business class passengers. However, as is always the case, economy passengers used it too. Nobody stopped them.
A word of advice if you book short haul business class with British Airways. They have an empty middle seat, but they put a tray table on it. So you can’t put your infant in that seat. I reviewed a business class flight from London to Amsterdam. That flight was excellent too.
The meal service started twenty minutes after take off.
The food was good. I had the vegetarian meal. It was a butternut squash curry with rice. The meal was served with a hot bread roll. I had fresh fruit for dessert.
I enjoyed the meal. The curry was pretty mild. But nicely spiced. The fruit was freshly cut pieces of melon, pineapple, kiwi fruit and strawberry.
The food was served on a single tray. With proper plates and metal cutlery.
The meat dish was the same curry, but with chicken.
People often complain about airline food. One reason is that the taste of food changes when you get into the sky. Curry is one dish that keeps its flavour in the sky. So it’s a popular dish for airlines.
My meal was better than most meals I’ve had in business class. Austrian Airlines is part of the Lufthansa Group. I flew in Lufthansa short haul business class, from London to Frankfurt. Review here. Their food was much worse. A cold bean salad. Is bean salad even a meal?!
Austrian Airlines have a complimentary bar in business class.
I started off with a water. I often get dehydrated on flights. But you know how it is.. I start of with alcohol and regret it later on! So it’s important to drink enough water. This time I remembered, and I’m proud of myself!
With my dinner, I asked for a beer. It was a local Austrian beer. It tasted like a standard lager. I was hoping for a wheat beer. Wheat beer is popular is Austria and Germany. But sadly not on this occasion.
Tea and coffee were offered after dinner. I chose not to partake. If I have a hot drink after alcohol, I just get a headache.
The crew were quite good at offering refills. They asked a couple of times. I already had a Prosecco in the lounge, so I didn’t want to drink too much.
I was pleased with Austrian’s drinks service. They did everything that was expected. The after dinner tea and coffee was a nice touch.
There’s a lot to like with Business Class on Austrian Airlines. The food was good, the alcohol was complimentary, the middle seat was blocked and I paid a really good price.
I flew in Virgin Atlantic Business Class. From London to Mumbai. Review here. Their seat reclined to a fully flat bed, the crew were lovely and the food was nice. On the flip side, the amenity kit was cheap.
