Al Habtoor Palace Budapest: Rooftop Pool & Dome Lounge

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest is magnificent. It’s a cut above other 5* City Hotels I’ve stayed at. The hotel has an excellent location in the centre of Budapest, overlooking the Budapest Eye.

The hotel oozes luxury and charm at every turn. The design is beautiful. The service was impressive. I arrived at 11.45am, and was allowed to check in straight away. There’s a stunning swimming pool on the 8th floor. The Club Lounge was one of the very best I’ve been to. They had five food presentations throughout the day, with high quality food. All freshly prepared. Insider Tip: If you can, try to book a rate that includes club lounge access. The food is excellent. You’ll also save money on meals that you would otherwise have to pay for outside.

I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. I took loads of photos. Each photos can be clicked to open out the full slideshow.

I stayed at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest — and paid $445 for a family room that sleeps four. On the very same night, the Four Seasons down the road wanted $910 for a room of similar quality. So before we go any further: this place is not the splurge you'd think it is.

There's a lot I haven't told you yet. I was upgraded to a room on the top floor, the only floor with a balcony. Though I'll be honest — the balcony has virtually no view, thanks to a very high side wall, so I mostly used it to dry our swimming clothes. The bathroom, on the other hand, came stocked with Diptyque toiletries, and the breakfast is cooked fresh to order off a proper menu.

If you're planning your own few days in the city, the sightseeing is half the fun — I booked our Danube evening cruise and a couple of the walking tours through the local tours I always use on Viator, and it saved me a small fortune over booking on the door. Well worth a look before you go.

What I Liked

  • Excellent City Centre Location
  • Beautiful architecture and design
  • 8th floor swimming pool and hot tub
  • One of the best club lounges I’ve been to
  • I was allowed to check in at 11.45am
  • High quality breakfast
  • I was offered a prosecco at check-in
  • I was given a room on the top floor, with a balcony

What Could Be Improved

  • All good for me

The Booking

I paid $445 for a family room. For four people to stay in.

The room also came with Club Lounge Access. The Club Lounge is located on the 8th floor, and they provide five separate food presentations per day.

I thought the room was pretty good value. On the same date, The Four Seasons Budapest was charging $910 for the night. The Four Seasons is a hotel of similar quality.

Budapest does five-star luxury far cheaper than you'd expect. It's one of the best-value grand cities in Europe.

For a hotel of this quality, the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest is a genuine steal. Try finding a five-star like this in Paris or London for the money.

Al Habtoor Palace Budapest prices do swing with the season, so it's worth punching in your own dates before you book.

On price, I paid $445 for a family room. For a five-star this central and this polished, that felt like a steal — the Four Seasons down the road wanted $910 for a comparable night. If you want to check current Al Habtoor Palace Budapest prices and grab the family room rate, it's worth booking through my link.

The Location

The Al Habtoor Palace is located right in the centre of Budapest. Overlooking Erzsébet Square, which is a beautiful public park. The Budapest Eye is located in the park. Modelled after the London Eye, it’s a large ferris wheel, with views over the city. The hotel is 12 miles from Budapest Airport. The journey took about 40 minutes by taxi. It cost $30.

Erzsébet Square doubles as one of the city's main transport hubs, so you don't actually need that taxi. The 100E Airport Express bus runs straight from the airport to Deák Ferenc tér, which is right on the doorstep of the hotel. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 2,500 HUF — around €7. A fraction of the taxi fare.

Though I'll admit, it doesn't look terribly glamorous rocking up to the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest having climbed off the airport bus with your suitcase!

From the hotel you can walk to almost everything worth seeing. The Chain Bridge is about 0.6 miles away, roughly a 10 minute stroll down to the river. The Hungarian Parliament — that great neo-Gothic showpiece on the Danube — is around 0.9 miles, a 15 minute walk. Buda Castle sits across the river and is about a mile off, closer to 20 minutes on foot once you've crossed the bridge.

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest sits in District V, the Belváros. This is the smart, central heart of Budapest. Elegant, walkable, and full of grand old buildings. Fashion Street and its designer shops are a minute or two away, and there are cafés and restaurants on every corner. It's the sort of neighbourhood where you can wander out with no plan and still have a lovely afternoon. Which, frankly, is my favourite kind.

One tip for getting home: I reviewed the Plaza Premium Lounge at Budapest Airport so you can eat, drink and unwind before your flight instead of pacing the terminal with a $6 coffee.

Use an eSIM in Budapest

When I landed in Budapest, the last thing I wanted was to pay silly roaming fees just to check a map. So I used an eSIM instead.

I grabbed 1GB for 7 days for around $4. Other packages are available if you're a heavier user.

No queuing at a kiosk. No swapping tiny SIM cards over a hotel sink. Just data, the second I stepped off the plane.

The provider is rated 4.7* from over 17,000 reviews, so I wasn't taking a punt on it.

Honestly, this is a no brainer. I'm a little annoyed at every roaming charge I paid before I discovered this.

The Best Activities in Budapest

Walk across the Chain Bridge at dusk

You don't need to pay a penny for one of the best experiences in Budapest. Just walk down to the river and cross the Chain Bridge on foot. It's about 10 minutes on foot from the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, and as the light drops and the Parliament lights up across the water, it's genuinely magical. Do it once each way — the view back towards Buda Castle is the one you'll photograph.

Budapest City Landmarks Walking Tour

If you want the city's story without spending a fortune, book your spot here. It's just $4, and it's rated 4.9* from over 2,200 reviews. Two hours on foot with a local guide who links up the big landmarks and fills in the history. Honestly, for the price of a coffee, it's the easiest yes on this list. Just wear comfy shoes — it's all walking.

Danube Cruise and Dinner with Live Music

For a proper evening out, you can book here. It's $57, rated 4.66* from over 7,500 reviews. You glide past the Parliament and the castle from the water, with dinner, live music and a bit of dancing thrown in. It's pricier than the bare-bones sightseeing cruises, but you're getting a full evening, not just a boat ride. The rating isn't quite five stars, so keep your expectations sensible on the food — the views do the heavy lifting.

Private Full-Day Budapest Sightseeing Tour

If you'd rather have the whole city to yourselves, book the private tour here. It's $175 and rated 4.94* from over 340 reviews. A full day, on foot or by car, with a private guide taking you exactly where you want to go at your own pace. It's the splurge option, no question. But split between a family or a few friends, having your own guide for a whole day is a lovely way to see the city — and no queuing behind a big group.

The Hotel

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest is a stunning hotel, right in the centre of Budapest. It has amazing architecture and décor. Think high ceilings, chandeliers and classic architecture. The hotel has the following facilities:

  • 24 hour fitness centre
  • Swimming pool and Spa
  • 8th floor Club Lounge
  • Multiple Restaurants
  • Excellent service

Check in was an impressive experience. I arrived at the hotel at 11.30am. Well before my 3pm check-in time. The front desk agent was very friendly. He spent 15 minutes, finding a room for us. He really didn’t have to do that.

When I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in Edinburgh, I arrived a little early and the front desk agents made no effort to find a room.

At check-in, I was offered a drink. Orange juice or Prosecco. I politely declined, as I don’t drink a lot of alcohol. Both my son and my daughter took a glass of orange juice. They seemed to enjoy their drink, so I changed my mind! I took the glass of prosecco, which I shared with my wife.

It was perfectly fine. More importantly, I appreciated it. It’s nice when a hotel goes a little bit further to make your stay special.

The hotel is located over 9 floors. The restaurants are on the ground floor. The club lounge is located on the 8th floor. The health club and swimming pool is on the 9th floor.

There are three restaurants on the ground floor. Kupola Lounge is where they serve breakfast. They also serve food and drinks throughout the day. It has giant ceilings with a dome on top. There’s also a grand chandelier. It’s worth coming here, just to get a photo!

Kupola Bar is a sophisticated bar, with an extensive wine and cocktail list. Ottimo is an Italian Restaurant.

The building itself is far older than the Al Habtoor Palace name above the door — older still than the Al Habtoor Palace flag it flew before that. It was constructed in the early twentieth century as the grand headquarters of an Italian insurance company, and the glass cupola that now crowns the Kupola Lounge is part of that original architecture. Which explains why the room feels more like a piece of old Budapest than a modern hotel add-on.

If you're still deciding where to lay your head in the city, I also stayed at the Intercontinental Budapest on the Danube — worth a read before you book, because that riverside location is a very different (and lovely) way to see Budapest.

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest has joined Preferred Hotels & Resorts, sitting in their Legend Collection. So the five-star polish hasn't gone anywhere. It's just wearing a different name these days.

The Restaurants

There are three restaurants at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, all on the ground floor.

Kupola Lounge is the one I know best. I had breakfast here, and it's a stunning room — giant ceilings, a dome on top, and a grand chandelier. Worth a visit just for the photo.

Kupola Bar is the sophisticated option, with an extensive wine and cocktail list. The place for a proper evening drink.

Ottimo is the Italian restaurant at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest. I didn't eat here myself, so I can't tell you how the food is — but if you fancy Italian without leaving the building, this is it.

The Elite Benefits

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest went above and beyond.

  • They let me check in at 11.45am
  • I was allowed to check out at 4pm
  • I got an upgrade to a room on the top floor
  • I had a nice in room gift of fruits and some cakes

The Room

I booked a family room, for my family of four to stay in. I was given a room on the top floor. Floor 9. This was a pretty sweet upgrade. It’s always great to stay on the top floor. But even more importantly, the rooms on this floor have a balcony. None of the rooms on the other floors do. The room was really nice. It had the following features:

  • Large double bed
  • Extra single bed
  • Balcony
  • Large TV
  • Large Desk
  • Side table with side chair
  • Nespresso coffee machine
  • Large bathroom with separate bath and shower
  • Ottoman at the end of the bed

There was a welcome gift as we entered the room. A bowl of fruit and some small desserts.

The room had a classical design with fabric furniture pieces. I liked it. It keeps with the design of the hotel. It also chimes with the fact that Budapest is an historical city.

The room has a balcony. Which is a cool feature. The balcony is pretty large. You could say it was a terrace. Annoyingly, there is virtually no view from the balcony. The side wall is very high, with just small gaps to view outwards. I didn’t use the balcony all that much. Just to dry our swimming clothes!

The bathroom was large and luxurious. There was a separate bathtub and shower. The toiletries were by Diptyque. A luxury French brand. Frankly, the lotion was divine.

The main bed was large, comfortable and firm. I had a fabulous night’s sleep on it. My daughter slept on the spare bed. I couldn’t tell you how it was, but she didn’t complain!

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest had a Nespresso coffee machine. I didn’t try it, as I rarely drink coffee. They also had a tea selection. Annoyingly, they didn’t have a kettle. You’re supposed to warm your water with the coffee machine.

This is quite common at hotels, especially in the US. It never works well! The water doesn’t get hot enough to make good tea. Also, the water often has the flavour of coffee.

All in, the room at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest had everything I needed and then some. A large double bed, an extra single bed for when the family piles in, a balcony, a big TV and a proper desk to actually get some work done. Even a Nespresso machine for the morning coffee. Not a bad spot to come back to at the end of the day.

The Breakfast

I had breakfast at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, in the Kupola Lounge on the ground floor. This is a stunning room, with a massive ceiling. With a dome on top.

There was a small buffet with fruits and cold cuts. The rest of the food was ordered off a menu. You can order as many items as you like. I do like this. It means that your food is fresh. The portions themselves weren’t too big, but the food was very high quality.

The following dishes were on the menu:

  • Eggs any way
  • Eggs benedict
  • Scrambled eggs with Lesco
  • Langos
  • Shakshuka
  • Asian broth
  • Garden Salad
  • Avocado and smoked salmon toast
  • Breakfast bagel with bacon, egg and avocado
  • French toast
  • Porridge
  • Crepes
  • Pancakes
  • Bircher Muesli

At the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, I got to try a range of dishes. Including pancakes, porridge and hash browns. Everything was freshly made, and of the highest quality.

The pancakes were fluffy and thick. American style. The hash browns were crispy on the outside. The porridge was very well made too.

The Club Lounge

I booked a room with Club Lounge Access. The Lounge at the Al Habtoor Palace was a step above most lounges. One of the best club lounges I’ve been to.

Most lounges offer breakfast and evening happy hour with alcohol. With tea/coffee and snacks throughout the day.

The Lounge at the Al Habtoor Palace, had five separate food presentations per day. Breakfast, light snacks for lunch, Bites in the afternoon, Apero time (happy hour) and Cordials/Desserts.

The lounge was located on the 8th floor. The same floor as the Spa and Gym.

The food was excellent quality. Once again, a step above most other lounges offer. The food was all made fresh, and not simply reheated in the oven.

During my stay, I tried the light snacks at lunch time. I also tried the evening happy hour (Apero time).

The lunch time presentation was really good. With fresh breads, soup, guacamole, sandwiches and cakes. I had carrot soup on one day and zucchini soup the other time. Both were excellent.

I tried the guacamole too. It was fresh and bursting with flavour.

Throughout the day, the lounge offers a range of drinks. Tea, coffee, beer and soft drinks. There was a very swanky looking Nespresso coffee machine. I didn’t try it, but I’m sure it tasted great. The tea was by Julius Meinl. A high end Austrian brand.

During the evening happy hours, they had some snacks and a wider range of alcohol. In addition to the beers were a range of wines. There weren’t any spirits offered.

There were four hot snacks offered during happy hour. Asparagus Gratin, Chicken Tortellini, Beef Bourguignon and quiche. I only tried the asparagus dish, as I’m a veggie (don’t judge!). It was pretty good. But obviously not a full meal.

I was super impressed with the club lounge at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest.

The Swimming Pool and Spa

On the 8th floor of the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest was the swimming pool and spa. Which was pretty fabulous. The pool was a glass ceiling, on the roof of the hotel. So it feels very roomy and luxurious. And lots of light comes in.

There’s also a jacuzzi. Which was beautifully hot when I used it. In addition, there’s a sauna and a steam room. I used the steam room, which was nice. Not too hot.

I had a treatment in the spa, as did my wife. I got a 30 minute facial, which was very impressive. The masseuse was really good. She also gave me a head massage during the facial. She had very strong hands.

If you're weighing up the spa at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, I'd say it's worth booking a treatment in. Both my wife and I did, and the therapists knew what they were doing — my 30 minute facial even came with a proper head massage thrown in. Between the rooftop pool, the jacuzzi, the sauna and the steam room, you could happily lose an afternoon up on the 8th floor.

The Fitness Centre

The Al Habtoor Palace Budapest has a 24 hour fitness centre. On the 8th floor. It’s pretty small, but there are enough machines to have a good workout. There were dumbbells, cardio machines and a weight cable.

Conclusion

I stayed at the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest, and it left a real impression. The location in the centre of the city is hard to beat — a minute from the Budapest Eye and walkable to almost everything. The club lounge, with five separate food presentations a day, was one of the best I've been to. And at $445 for a family room, with the Four Seasons wanting $910 down the road, it's far better value than a five-star this polished has any right to be.

Not everything was perfect. The balcony that came with my top-floor upgrade has virtually no view, thanks to a very high side wall, so it mostly dried our swimming clothes. There's no kettle for a proper cup of tea. Small niggles, though — nothing that soured the stay.

Because here's the thing. Despite those limited status perks, the hotel still went above and beyond — an early 11.45am check-in, a 4pm checkout, the top-floor upgrade and a welcome gift of fruit and cakes. Add the Diptyque toiletries, the fresh-to-order breakfast and that glorious 8th-floor pool under a glass roof, and you've got a hotel I'd happily book again. If you want central Budapest luxury without the Four Seasons price tag, this is the one I'd point you to.
