Delta Sky Club Miami Review

The Delta Sky Club at Miami International Airport surpassed my expectations. Better than most US Lounges. It’s in the South Terminal, right after security.

The lounge has a manned bar with complimentary alcohol. There’s also a buffet with a variety of hot and cold dishes.

The lounge also has natural light. Although no runway views.

I enjoyed my 1.5 hour stay in the lounge. The downside is that the lounge was very busy. This is sometimes a problem with Delta Sky Clubs.

A lot of people have access to Delta Sky Clubs. There’s many ways to gain access. Including by having the right American Express card. In this article, I cover the different ways to access the lounge.

This article is a detailed guide for what to expect. When you visit then lounge. I took loads of photos. Each photo can be clicked, to open out the slideshow.

What I liked

  • Varied buffet. Range of hot dishes
  • Starbucks drip coffee
  • Complimentary Alcohol
  • Convenient location

What Could Be Improved

  • Busy lounge
  • Tea was not good

The Entry Requirements

There’s a lot of ways to access the Delta Sky Club Miami. I summarise these methods below:

  • Fly on Delta One. Domestic or International Travel
  • Purchase a Sky Club Membership for $695 annual fee
  • Get the Delta SkyMiles Reserve AMEX Card. $650 annual fee
  • Get the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business AMEX Card. $650 annual fee
  • Get the Platinum Card from AMEX. $695 annual fee
  • Get the Business Platinum Card from AMEX. $550 annual fee
  • Fly in Business or First with one of Delta’s 18 partner airlines
  • Hold elite status with LATAM, Westjet or Virgin Atlantic

I can’t say which method is best for you to get access. That will depend on your personal circumstances.

I do like the benefits offered by Virgin Atlantic. Weirdly, elite status with Virgin provides more benefits on Delta flights. Compared to having elite status with Delta.

Delta owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic. If you have elite status with Virgin, then you receive access to Delta lounges. Elite status with Delta doesn’t provide lounge access.

When you travel with Delta, just input your Virgin Atlantic account number. And not your Delta SkyMiles number. That way you’ll earn air miles and status with Virgin, rather than Delta. This is what I do.

I got access to the lounge as I was flying in International First Class with Delta. A Delta One ticket.

Lounge Access With Priority Pass

Another way to get lounge access is with a Priority Pass Membership. It’s a network of over 1,500 airport lounges worldwide.

You can buy membership here for 30% off. Standard Plus Membership costs $263, and comes with 10 free lounge visits per year. So each visit costs $26.30.

Prestige Membership costs $422 and comes with unlimited lounge visits.

The link above is an exclusive link. You won’t get any discount, if you go to the Priority Pass homepage. Thanks to Priority Pass for providing this benefit to my readers.

I would say that the quality of Priority Pass Lounges are comparable to Delta Sky Clubs. With a Priority Pass, you can access the Virgin Clubhouse in JFK, New York. Review here. One of my favourite lounges in the US. With restaurant quality food and champagne on tap.

In Miami Airport South Terminal, you can access the Turkish Airlines Lounge. With your Priority Pass Membership.

The Location

The Delta Sky Club is in the South Terminal of Miami International Airport.

The lounge has a pretty great location. It’s 20 feet after security, on the left hand side. You really can’t miss it!

The Lounge

The Delta Sky Club Miami isn’t that large, but it was busy.

It’s an L shaped lounge. The buffet and bar are at the very end of the L.

The lounge has the following facilities:

  • Lounge style leather seats
  • Buffet with hot dishes
  • Manned bar with complimentary alcohol
  • Windows to the outside
  • Small business centre
  • Showers

This lounge is a place to sit down, get fed and have something to drink. It does that job pretty well. Just don’t expect luxurious furnishings. The decor was functional. No more than that.

The seating was mostly low grey leather seats, with low tables. This sort of seating is very common in airport lounges. Next to the windows were some high chairs and tables.

There were windows to the outside. However, the view was pretty boring! Just a view of a roof. No runway views. However, I did appreciate the natural light.

There’s a small business centre. It’s just some cubicles that you can work in. There’s also a printer.

The lounge was very busy. This is common with Delta Sky Clubs, as so many people have access. The only free seats were the odd one or two. I was travelling as a family of 4, so this wasn’t ideal!

We did manage to find some suitable seats. We waited for a group to vacate their seats. And then we cleared the rubbish ourselves.

On a personal level, lounge access is a godsend! When I’m travelling with my family. For my family to eat well at an airport would probably come to $100.

In an airport lounge. Not only do we eat well, we also get free wi-fi and our own personal space. We end up eating healthier food too. There’s normally a salad option in the lounge buffet.

The Food

The food at the Delta Sky Club Miami was really good. There was a buffet at one end of the lounge. With a variety of hot and cold dishes available.

  • Salad, pitta bread, olives and hummus
  • Soup. Tomato or Chicken
  • White beans
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Turkey
  • Cold cuts
  • Vegetarian sliders
  • Desserts. Cookies and cheesecake

The food was better than expected. My meal on Delta’s domestic First Class had been awful! Delta use Gate Gourmet to cater the food on their flights. Who don’t have the best reputation.

In the lounge, all the food was regularly replaced. It was all perfectly edible. Not spectacular. But I had a full lunch and was satisfied.

I had tomato soup, white beans and vegetarian sliders. The tomato soup and white beans were nice and healthy. I didn’t like the vegetarian sliders, as it had sundried tomatoes. I don’t like sundried tomatoes. I don’t understand why anyone likes them!

The Drinks

The drinks service was very good. There was a manned bar next to the buffet. With a range of complimentary drinks. Beers, wine, spirits and cocktails were on offer.

There was also a range of chargeable drinks. The drinks menu is below.

There were two types of coffee available. You could get coffee from a machine. There was also Starbucks drip coffee available. Given that Americans are obsessed with Starbucks, this was a popular option!

There was also a small selection of teas.

I had an English Breakfast Tea. It wasn’t very good, sadly. I probably should have had a coffee.

Conclusion

The Delta Sky Club Miami ticks all the boxes. You can get fed and have something to drink. A decent place to chill for an hour or two.

It’s not super luxurious and I wouldn’t arrive early to visit the lounge. However it does what it needs to do.

I also visited the Delta Sky club in New York, JFK. Review here. I was really impressed. The lounge was large, with excellent food options and complimentary alcohol. There were also windows with runway views.

I flew in Delta’s International First Class. From Dublin to Miami. Review here. And boy was it good! I flew in a suite with a privacy door. There was a large TV and high quality headphones. Even better, I got a great deal. I paid $1,300 for the return flight.

I reviewed the Intercontinental Miami Doral. It’s my favourite hotel near Miami International Airport. With a lovely swimming pool and large rooms. I got a great deal, by booking with IHG points.
