Flights to Delhi from the UK: Cheapest Options 2027

Air India offers nonstop flights from London to Delhi starting at £366.09 in economy, suiting cost-conscious travellers. The airline is rated 1.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 1,918 UK reviews; it was the UK's most delayed airline in 2024, averaging 45 minutes late.

Flights to Delhi from the UK start at £366 in economy from London Heathrow. Nonstop service gets you there in roughly eight hours. The problem isn't finding a flight—it's finding a cheap one. Most travellers pay more than they need to because they don't know which airlines actually offer the best value, when to book, or what each carrier's fine print really says. This guide walks through the options, the prices, and the catches, so you can book with confidence.

Which Airlines Fly Direct to Delhi from the UK?

Air India operates four daily nonstops from London Heathrow to Delhi. Two fly the newer Airbus A350-900, and two use the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner—both newer, more comfortable aircraft. The flight time is just over eight hours.

British Airways also runs this route. Their fastest nonstop from Heathrow to Delhi runs about 8 hours 45 minutes, and they've added a third daily flight as of April 2025. Virgin Atlantic offers flights too, though you'll want to check their current schedule.

If you're flying from Manchester, there's no nonstop anymore. IndiGo launched a Manchester–Delhi service in November 2025 but is suspending both Manchester routes from August 2026, citing fuel costs and currency headwinds. For now, you'll connect via the Middle East with Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, or Turkish Airlines.

From Birmingham, Air India cancelled its only direct service in October 2026. If you live in the Midlands, you're now looking at either the one-stop via Amritsar (longer, sometimes cheaper) or driving to London.

How Much Do Flights to Delhi Actually Cost?

Air India flights from London to Delhi start at £366.09 in economy and £1,910.09 in business class. From Birmingham (before the route shut down), economy was £445.94. But here's the catch: those are the base fares. What you actually pay depends on three things.

When you book matters. Peak season (December to January) is expensive. Shoulder seasons (October–November, February–March) are cheaper. Booking six to eight weeks in advance usually gets you the best economy rate.

Which fare class you pick matters. Value fares (the cheapest) let you carry less baggage and charge steeply for changes. Flex fares (the most expensive of Air India's three tiers) let you change your flight free. Classic sits in the middle.

Which airline you choose matters. British Airways charges more on average but has a reputation for more reliable service. Qatar and Emirates, if you're willing to stopover, often undercut the nonstops for comparable total travel time.

Flight Times: How Long Is the Journey?

A nonstop flight from London to Delhi takes roughly eight hours and five minutes on Air India, or up to eight hours 45 minutes on other carriers—the difference is often how directly the route flies. Factor in three hours at the airport before departure (for international flights) and you're looking at an 11-hour total journey door-to-door. If you're stopover-bound, add four to five hours for the connection.

Flying to Delhi from Other UK Airports

London Heathrow (LHR) is where the action is. Air India runs four daily nonstops. British Airways has three. Virgin Atlantic operates here too. London Gatwick (LGW) also has Air India flights.

Birmingham (BHX) no longer has direct flights to Delhi. Air India pulled its nonstop in late October 2026.

Manchester (MAN) had IndiGo's nonstop until it suspended service in August 2026. After that, you'll need to connect through a Gulf hub.

Smaller airports (Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff) typically require at least one connection. Most routes feed through London. If you're not near London, the maths might look like: drive three hours to Heathrow (£50 parking) plus a cheaper connecting flight, or fly nonstop from London and skip the driving. Usually nonstop wins on total time, even if the airfare is higher.

How to Book Cheaper Flights to Delhi

Advance booking wins. Six to eight weeks ahead is the sweet spot for economy fares. Three months out, you're early and sometimes pay more. Two weeks out, you're late and definitely pay more.

Flexible dates save money. Mid-week departures and off-season travel (September–November, February–March) undercut December–January by 30–50%.

Special fares exist if you qualify. Air India offers students aged 12–30 up to 10% off. Book through an IDP partner and get an extra ?750 (around £6) off one-way or ?1,500 (around £12) off return. The UK to India Sale gives premium-class passengers 20% off (capped at £80 per booking) through 31 December 2026—but it excludes economy, which is where most budget searchers are looking.

Last-minute deals drop fares sometimes, but they're unpredictable. Set alerts on Google Flights or Skyscanner for the route if you're flexible on dates. Book direct through the airline's website. Third-party sites (Expedia, Booking.com) add fees. Booking on Air India's own site or app gets you the base price.

Air India's Fares Decoded: The Honest Picture

Air India sells three economy tiers: Value, Classic, and Flex. Value is the cheapest. It includes one checked bag (15 kg), carry-on, and a standard seat. You can't change the flight without a penalty, and cancellations are refunded to your original payment method, minus a fee. Classic adds 20 kg checked baggage and lower change fees. Flex gives 25 kg baggage and free flight changes.

Business class ranges from 30 kg (Value) to 40 kg (Flex) and includes lounge access, lie-flat beds, and better meals.

Here's what you need to know plainly: Air India was the most delayed airline departing the UK in 2024. PA analysed Civil Aviation Authority data and found Air India's UK departures ran an average of 45 minutes 48 seconds late. The Gatwick–Bangalore route was worse, averaging 1 hour 23 minutes late over 50 departures. Air India says the delays were mostly due to factors beyond its control and claims early-2025 performance improved. But if you're connecting onward or have another flight soon after landing, that delay history is worth factoring into your decision.

Also worth knowing: Trustpilot reviewers most often complain about unhelpful staff and flight delays. Air India's rating sits at 1.4 out of 5 from nearly 1,900 UK reviews, with 86% giving it just one star. But the mobile app scores 4.7 out of 5, and the airline recently earned a 4-Star Skytrax rating for cabin quality—a newer upgrade, not yet reflected in the Trustpilot score. It suggests the airline is improving on the product, even if service issues linger.

One last detail: not all Air India flights to Delhi have the newer A350. Two of the four daily flights from London Heathrow use the A350-900; the other two use the newer Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. If the cabin experience matters to you, check which aircraft you're booked on.

Baggage Allowances and Hidden Charges

Checked baggage depends on your fare: Economy Value is 15 kg per bag. Classic is 20 kg. Flex is 25 kg. Business Value is 30 kg. Flex is 40 kg. Infants (under 2) get 10 kg in economy, 15 kg in business. No single bag can weigh more than 32 kg.

If you need more, you can prepay for an additional checked bag (up to 32 kg). Book it online, by phone, or at the airport up to six hours before departure. Meal service is included on all long-haul flights. Seat selection, advance booking fees, and extra legroom can add £15–£60 per person depending on your route and cabin.

Delays, Cancellations, and What You Can Claim

If your UK-departing flight is delayed more than three hours due to factors the airline controls, you can claim up to £520 under UK261 regulations. Air India runs its own EU/UK delay claim form for departures from Heathrow, Gatwick, and Birmingham.

Watch your spelling: if your name on the booking doesn't match your passport exactly, Air India will not let you board. Not a change fee—no boarding at all. Double-check before you pay. You'll need a UK Standard Visitor visa for India—apply online through the Indian government. Complete a separate e-arrival card up to 72 hours before arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have at least two blank pages.

Should You Book Air India to Delhi?

Book Air India if you value a nonstop route, you want to save on airfare in economy, and the delay history doesn't worry you. Skip it if you're tight on time after landing, you've had bad experiences with customer service, or you're flying from somewhere other than London or Gatwick. British Airways nonstop costs more but has a stronger reputation for on-time performance and cabin service. If you don't mind a stopover, Qatar Airways and Emirates often undercut the nonstops for comparable total travel time.

Air India's prices are competitive for nonstops from London, and booking through this link gets you straight to current availability and the fares I've quoted. Advance booking by six to eight weeks typically gets you the best economy rate. If you're flying from another UK airport, check Manchester and Birmingham's current options too—sometimes a connection costs less than the drive to London.

The flights you'll find at the cheapest price are the Value fares with tight baggage and strict change rules. If you think you might shift dates, pay the extra for Classic or Flex so you don't lose your money. And once you're booked, set a reminder to check in 24 hours before—that's when the best seat picks open up.
