Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth: Clifftop Views & Dated Rooms

The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel had been on my radar for some time. The hotel is on top of a cliff, overlooking Bournemouth beach. I had a lovely stay at the hotel – save for a couple of small issues.

The hotel is a Bournemouth institution – it opened in 1875. Of all the hotels I saw in Bournemouth, the Marriott looked to be the best. It definitely had the best location. Bournemouth is located on the South Coast of England. It has a beautiful sandy beach, and is close to the Jurassic Coast – which is a world heritage site. The hotel is very close to Bournemouth Pier and has terrific sea views.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this hotel. The Tripadvisor reviews were very mixed. There are a lot of 1* reviews. I’ve learned to be sceptical of Tripadvisor reviews. Half the time, people only do reviews because that have had a bad experience. Also, many reviewers have unrealistic expectations. If one minor this goes wrong, they immediately post a 1* review.

For this review, I made sure to take lots of photos. Each photo can be clicked to open the full slideshow.

What the Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth reviews rarely tell you is that the hotel is split into two distinct sections: the main building, with refurbished rooms and proper sea views, and a separate block called the Cottages, where rooms are older and the views are largely eaten up by trees. Which section you land in makes a significant difference. Book the main building if you can.

As a Marriott Platinum, the elite treatment at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel was genuinely good. Free parking was thrown in alongside a 4pm checkout and complimentary breakfast — and the parking, specifically, isn't a requirement at UK Marriott properties. Worth knowing if you have status and you're deciding where to spend it.

The pier nearby has more going on than a gentle seafront stroll. Rock climbing, zip lining, miniature golf. There's also a lift down to the beach for those of us disinclined to tackle the steps. My one genuine gripe: the shower didn't work on the morning we checked out. We ran a bath instead, with a bus to catch. Not ideal.

If you want to get more from Marriott stays like this — particularly around status and points — the Marriott Vacation Club deal I list on my resources page includes 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points and is worth a look before your next trip.

What I Liked

  • Excellent location next to Bournemouth Beach
  • Lovely sea views
  • Good elite benefits as a Marriott Platinum
  • Decent breakfast

What Could Be Improved

  • My room was dated
  • The shower didn’t work properly

The Booking

Bournemouth isn't the priciest destination on the South Coast, but clifftop hotels with sea views don't come cheap. Rates at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel vary depending on when you go and which room category you're after. I paid £95 for one night. For the location — right on the cliff edge, overlooking the beach, walking distance to the pier — that felt like fair money.

The Location

Bournemouth is a very popular seaside town on the south of England. The Bournemouth Marriott Highcliff has a prime location. It’s located on the top of a cliff, overlooking the sea.

You are just 5 minutes walk from Bournemouth Pier. Location doesn’t get any better than this. Because of this location, there are lovely sea views from the hotel. You can get down to the beach, by taking an elevator down to the sea.

There are also some steps for the fitter readers. There are lots of activities on the pier. There’s rock climbing, zip lining, miniature golf and lots more. On a personal level, I had a great weekend here. I would happily return. It’s not often I say that! I mention in the article introduction that the Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth had been on my radar for some time.

This is because there aren’t many chain hotels at British seasides. The Bournemouth Marriott Highcliff is one of the nicest. I prefer chains like Marriott and Hilton to independent hotels. The standard is normally higher.

There are a lot of hotels in Bournemouth. From what I saw, the Marriott has the best location of any hotel in Bournemouth. There is a Hilton Hotel, 5 minutes walk from the Marriott. The hotel looks to be smart and modern, but isn’t overlooking the sea.

British sea-sides are interesting places. Much of the coastline is absolutely stunning. However, you don’t have luxury resorts like in other countries. In places like Spain, Greece and the US, there are many more high end resorts.

This is probably because of climate. The UK is a cold country and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean – which is freezing. It’s not easy to swim in the water or walk along the beach barefoot. This means that most tourists to seaside towns are domestic. There aren’t many foreign visitors.

Bournemouth Airport is about 5 miles from the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel. By taxi it's roughly 15–20 minutes and should cost you around £15–18.

There's also a bus — Morebus operates a route into town from the airport, which takes around 45 minutes and costs about £3.50. Not glamorous, but it works.

If you're flying into Southampton instead, that's 24 miles away. Budget 40 minutes by taxi and around £50–55. Most visitors arriving by rail will come into Bournemouth train station, which is only 0.8 miles from the hotel — a 15-minute walk uphill, or a short cab if you've packed like I typically do.

Bournemouth town centre is about 0.6 miles away. That's a 12-minute walk along the cliff road and down into the main shopping streets. The Lower Gardens — Bournemouth's long strip of public parkland that cuts through the town towards the beach — is about 0.4 miles, 8–10 minutes on foot. Worth a wander.

If you want to explore further:

Sandbanks Peninsula is 5 miles by road — about 15 minutes in a car. One of the most expensive patches of real estate in the UK, and the beach there is genuinely beautiful.

Poole Old Town and quay is 6 miles away. Around 20 minutes by car. Good for lunch or an afternoon out.

The Jurassic Coast proper — Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove — starts around 25–30 miles west. An hour's drive. Worth the trip if you have a full day and a car; less practical otherwise.

There's also a Hilton hotel about five minutes' walk if the Marriott is fully booked. If Hilton properties suit you better, the Hilton Debit Card UK is worth knowing about — it's a cheap route to Hilton Gold status, which unlocks breakfast and upgrades across the estate.

One thing worth sorting before you arrive: parking. The hotel sits up on the West Cliff, which is a residential clifftop run where the on-street spaces fill fast and the restrictions are real. If you're driving down, the simplest route is to use the hotel's own parking rather than circling the side roads hoping for a gap.

So if you're weighing up Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel parking, treat it as part of the booking rather than an afterthought. It's the kind of detail that's easy to ignore until you're sat outside with a boot full of bags and nowhere to leave the car.

Best Activities in Bournemouth

Bournemouth Beach is the obvious place to start. It's one of the finest sandy beaches in England, and it's a short walk from the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott hotel. Stroll out to the pier, enjoy the sea air, let the kids run. No booking required.

Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door Half-Day Tour

One of the most photographed stretches of coastline in England sits about 30 miles from Bournemouth — and this tour gets you there without the faff of hiring a car. Book your place here from $41. Rated 4.9* from over 470 reviews. You'll see Lulworth Cove and the iconic Durdle Door limestone arch — it genuinely looks like a screensaver. The half-day format leaves your afternoon free, which I appreciated.

Full Day Jurassic Coast Tour

For something more immersive, this full-day version covers more of the World Heritage coastline. Book your spot here from $68. Rated 4.9* from over 160 reviews. It's a long day — your legs will know about it by the end — but the scenery is extraordinary. Worth the upgrade if this is your one chance to do the Jurassic Coast properly.

Walking Tour of Bath

Bath is about 90 minutes from Bournemouth and comfortably one of the most beautiful cities in England. Book your place here from $30. Rated 4.95* from nearly 2,000 reviews — one of the best-rated tours I've come across. A Blue Badge guide takes you through the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent, and the rest of the UNESCO city. Outstanding value.

The Hotel

The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel is something of an institution in Bournemouth. The hotel first opened its doors in 1875! It was brought under the Marriott umbrella in 2001. For this reason, the hotel isn’t like most modern hotels. It’s definitely quirky hotel.

The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel has two different sections. The main part of the hotel has the restaurant, bar and some of the rooms. These rooms are the best rooms in the hotel. They are modern and have uninterrupted views of the sea. There is also a section called ‘The Cottages.’ This is to one side of the hotel. The rooms in this section are older, and the sea views are obstructed.

The hotel has the following facilities:

  • Located on a cliff, overlooking Bournemouth beach
  • Bar and restaurant on the ground floor
  • Outdoor swimming pool
  • 24-hour fitness centre

The ground floor lobby was very small, with some seats. Very different to modern hotels, where they have a large and impressive lobby.

There was a bar and a restaurant on the ground floor. There is a French restaurant called Brasserie Blanc. Both the bar and the restaurant looked classy.

I could see the outdoor pool from my room. I don’t think it was open, however. I didn’t see anyone use it. However, the weather was very cold during my stay.

Victorian proportions, high ceilings, and period detailing that survived well over a century of use before the brand conversion. That institutional life shows in the fabric of the building — the main section especially, where the original bones are most intact.

Marriott's refurbishment updated the rooms in that wing without levelling the character, which is why the hotel feels unlike almost any other property on the programme. It's also why the gap between the main building and the Cottages is so pronounced — one has had money spent on it, the other is still running on Victorian infrastructure.

A few people ask specifically about the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel spa. I'll be honest — I didn't use it during my stay. The property has an outdoor pool and a 24-hour gym, both of which I've covered. If spa access is a priority for your trip, I'd call ahead to confirm current availability and any booking requirements before you arrive rather than assuming it's included.

The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel sits on the West Cliff, the elevated run of coastline that gives the "Highcliff" name its meaning and looks out across Poole Bay. It's a short walk from the West Cliff's other clifftop hotels, but the Marriott has the edge of the seafront proper rather than a side road behind it.

The Restaurants

There is one restaurant in the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott, and it does the heavy lifting for both dinner and breakfast.

Brasserie Blanc sits on the ground floor and is part of Raymond Blanc's UK brasserie chain. French-leaning menu, smart but relaxed atmosphere. I had breakfast there rather than dinner, but the room looked the part — properly laid tables, decent light, the kind of place you'd be happy to sit for an hour.

Breakfast at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel was genuinely good. Big buffet spread with cook-to-order options alongside the usual continental fare. The porridge was excellent. The tea, on the other hand, was undrinkable — tasted like it had been brewed in a dishwasher. Worth flagging to the staff, which I didn't bother doing at the time. My loss.

The Room

I was staying with my extended family at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel, so I booked two rooms. One room was in the main hotel and was modern and plush. The 2nd room was in the cottages and was more dated. My sister-in-law took the better room, and I stayed in the dated room with my wife. There is a big difference between the rooms, and I would suggest booking a refurbished room.

The Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth was full during my stay, so I didn’t get an upgrade. As a Marriott Platinum, I'm entitled to upgrades – if there is space.

The main hotel building has 4 floors. I stayed in room 506. This sounds like a room on the 5th floor, but sadly not! The Cottages are to one side of the hotel. The rooms are on the ground floor and the 1st floor. Room 506 was on the 1st floor, so the view was slightly better.

The room had the following features:

  • Old-fashioned room
  • No Air conditioning. There was a radiator
  • Obstructed views of the sea
  • Double bed
  • Small bathroom
  • Television
  • Small desk
  • Two side chairs
  • In room tea and instant coffee

The room was old fashioned. In need of refurb if I’m honest. The furniture was fine. However, the carpet and décor were dated.

There was no air conditioning. This didn’t bother me, as I stayed during winter. However, in the summer, the room would surely be very hot. The windows themselves didn’t open fully.

The room looked out on to Bournemouth beach, but the views were heavily obstructed. You could just about make out the beach and the pier, behind the trees. In fairness to the hotel, they didn’t advertise the room as having a sea view.

The room had instant coffee and Twinings tea. I had a peppermint tea before bed, and an English Breakfast tea the next day. So I made use of this facility.

The bathroom was small. In the morning, I wasn’t able to get the shower to work. So I had to have a bath. This isn’t ideal, as we were in a hurry.

Overall, the room wasn’t the best. However, it was fine for my 1 night stay at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel. We spent most of our time out and about.

The Breakfast

The breakfast at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel was served in the Raymond Brasserie on the ground floor. There was a large buffet spread, with a small selection of cook to order items. The breakfast was very good quality. You had a full English breakfast, cook to order eggs and continental items. The following items were available:

  • Cook to order eggs
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Sausages. Meat and veggie
  • Bacon
  • Baked Beans
  • Mushrooms
  • Hash browns
  • Pancakes
  • Cook to order porridge
  • Pancakes
  • Bread
  • Cold cuts
  • Fruit
  • Yoghurt

There was a good selection, and most of the food was decent quality. I had mushrooms, hash browns, toast, pancakes and porridge. The porridge was cook to order and excellent. The hash browns were nice too. The pancakes were ok. They were thin, French style crepes. I prefer the fat stack of pancakes that you get in the US. On Sundays, I make fluffy vegan pancakes for my family – much better! The cooked mushrooms weren’t great – they were undercooked and lacking in flavour.

Tea and coffee were served to order from the restaurant staff. This is common at hotels in the UK. We got a pot of tea for the table. This was bad – very bad. It tasted like dishwasher powder and was undrinkable. I would have told the waitress, but they looked quite busy and I couldn’t be bothered.

If you're researching Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel breakfast before booking, the honest verdict is that it's one of the better hotel breakfasts I've had at a UK chain property. The Brasserie Blanc setting helps — it's a proper restaurant, not a converted function room with a trolley. Just avoid the tea. As a Marriott Platinum, breakfast at the Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth was complimentary, but I'd call it worth paying for at rack rate too.

Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel breakfast is a proper full English spread. Cook-to-order eggs done however you like them, sausages for the carnivores and the veggies, bacon, and a generous helping of baked beans. Nothing reinvented. Just the stuff you actually want with your first coffee of the day.

Was it the finest hotel breakfast of my life? No. But it's honest, it's hot, and it sets you up nicely for a morning on the seafront. If you've been digging through Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel reviews wondering whether breakfast is worth getting up for — it is. I went back for seconds. The sacrifices I make for the readers.

The Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel breakfast was a decent spread, and as a Platinum it came complimentary — which always makes the eggs taste better. Nothing that'll have you writing home about it. But a solid, proper start before a day on the seafront, and it does the job and then some when it isn't costing you extra.

The Elite Benefits

I am a Marriott Platinum. My treatment from the Marriott Highcliff Bournemouth was excellent. The check-in agent noted my loyalty and was proactive in offering the benefits. I received the following:

  • 4pm checkout
  • Free parking for my car
  • Free breakfast

The free parking was impressive. It’s not a requirement for hotels to give this to Marriott Platinums.

If you're considering going deeper into the Marriott ecosystem beyond point stays, my Marriott Vacation Club complete guide runs through how the programme works and where the value actually sits.

Fitness Centre

There’s a 24-hour fitness centre at the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel. I took a quick peek and took some photos. It was pretty good – better than most hotels. There was a decent range of equipment for a decent workout. Dumbbells, treadmill, exercise bike and other items. I didn’t work out, as I was staying with my family. However, when I travel alone, I will make use of the gym.

Conclusion

I enjoyed my stay at the Bournemouth Marriott Highcliff. It's a lovely hotel in a fabulous location. The breakfast was really good. The Marriott Platinum treatment was genuinely generous — comparable to what I experienced at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London, which is saying something. If you visit Bournemouth, this is where I'd stay.

The biggest thing most Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel reviews don't tell you is that the hotel you book and the hotel you get can be quite different. Land in the main building and you'll likely be delighted. End up in the Cottages — as I did — and the gap between what the property promises and what you experience is real. Book the main wing, specify it in your request, and you'll have a much better time.

That said, if you're a Marriott Bonvoy member with status, this property rewards you well. Free parking in a UK hotel is not guaranteed even at Platinum tier — here it was offered unprompted. Factor in the 4pm checkout and the included breakfast, and the value calculation tips firmly in your favour. The shower on our last morning was a problem we didn't have time to deal with, and the dated décor in the Cottages is genuinely showing its age. But the location is as good as it gets in Bournemouth, and that counts for a lot.

So would I recommend it? On balance, yes — with eyes open. If you've read a few Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel reviews and you're trying to work out whether the sea view and the period character justify the rate, my honest take is that they mostly do, as long as you land in the refurbished main building rather than the Cottages.

It's not flawless. But you're paying for a grand old seafront property with genuine bones, not a beige box off a ring road. For that, it earns its place.
