Lufthansa Senator Lounge Heathrow. Both annoying and nice. My Review

Lufthansa Senator Lounges are a step above their business class lounges. Designed for First Class passengers and people with Star Alliance Status.

In this review, you’ll find out what the Senator Lounge at London Heathrow is like.

The Senator Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 2 is a decent lounge. There have a wide variety of hot dishes and German breads. They also offer Prosecco and German Wheat beer on tap.

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge is next to Lufthansa’s Business Class Lounge. My main complaint with the Senator Lounge is that it’s virtually identical to the business class lounge! The decoration is definitely better. But the food and drinks are identical.

Also, the Senator Lounge was also super busy.

Terminal 2 is the home of Star Alliance at London Heathrow. Four airlines have lounges in the Terminal. Lufthansa, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines. The Lufthansa Lounges are the largest lounges in the terminal.

I made sure to take loads of photos for this article. Each photo can be clicked to open out the full slideshow. Know exactly what to expect when you visit.

  • In ‘Entry Requirements’, I explain how to get into the lounge
  • In ‘Location’, I explain where the lounge is
  • In ‘The Lounge’, you can see exactly what the lounge looks like and see what’s in it
  • I have a section on the ‘The Food.’ Probably my favourite part of the lounge
  • In ‘The Drinks’, you’ll see that the lounge has a wide variety of drinks. Sadly no champagne

The Entry Requirements

Lufthansa Senator Lounges are designed for First Class passengers and people with Star Alliance Status. In theory, they should be a cut above the business class lounges. I’m not so sure…

You can get access if you’re flying First Class with Lufthansa. Lufthansa don’t fly First Class from London. However, if you’re flying to Germany and connect to a First Class seat, you also get in.

You can also get access if you have Gold Status with Star Alliance.

The lounge was absolutely rammed when I visited. I had to double check that I wasn’t in a Manhattan cocktail bar!

Nearly all visitors would have had status with Star Alliance. Attaining gold status is not easy for leisure travellers. However, a lot of business people in London fly to Germany, on their company accounts!

If you don’t have access to the Senator Lounge, there are other options in Heathrow Terminal 2. You can pay for entry to the Plaza Premium Lounge. My review of that lounge is here. It’s been voted as the best 3rd party lounge in the World.

If you buy entry from the Plaza Premium website, then you get 10% off.

You can also get entry with a Priority Pass Membership. Priority Pass provides access to over 1,600 airport lounges worldwide. Signup with my exclusive link and get 30% off. This offer isn’t available to the general public. Thanks to Priority Pass for their generosity.

There are different membership options. Membership starts at only £48. Standard Plus Membership is £183 and comes with 10 free lounge visits per year. Each visit costs £18.30. Great value for unlimited food, unlimited alcohol, fast wi-fi, showers and personal space.

It sure beats spending £15 for a sandwich and a coffee from Starbucks!

The Location

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge has a pretty sweet location.

The lounge is in Heathrow Terminal 2. The home of Star Alliance. The lounge is in the main terminal building, near the A gates. Short haul flights tend to depart from the A gates.

The lounge is just two minutes after security. The Lufthansa Senator Lounge is next to the Lufthansa Business Lounge. You have to walk through the business lounge to get to the entrance door of the Senator Lounge.

At reception of the Lufthansa Business Lounge, I was given a receipt with a code. When I got to the door of the Senator Lounge, I swiped my receipt to attain entry to the lounge.

To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the entry system. There was nobody working at the entry of the Senator Lounge. It was very easy to follow someone into the Senator Lounge, even if you didn’t have access. Some people probably followed others into the Senator Lounge, without knowing they weren’t meant to have access!

Lufthansa is part of Star Alliance. There are three other Star Alliance Lounges in Heathrow Terminal 2. The Air Canada, United Club and Singapore Lounges are in Satellite Terminal B. Long Haul Flights often leave from Satellite Terminal B. If you have a long haul flight, you can consider one of those lounges. It takes 15 minutes to walk from the main Terminal Building to Satellite Terminal B.

Air Canada’s lounge is lovely. My review is here. The lounge is super stylish. They also have a beautiful model of an Air Canada Plane.

My favourite way to get to London Heathrow is probably the Heathrow Express. It’s a train service that takes 15 minutes from Central London. Kids under 15 go free, with a parent. If you book ahead from this page, prices start at £10 for a one way journey.

When it comes to airport travel, I always suggest to book ahead. Probably the most expensive way to travel to the airport is with a black taxi. Expect to pay £120 from Central London. Ouch!

The Lounge

The Lufthansa Senator Lounge is mid-sized. One side has windows to the outside. You get natural light, but the runway views are heavily obstructed.

Opposite the windows on the other side of the lounge, is the buffet counter. All the food is served from here. Tea, coffee and alcohol are also served from here.

The seating consists of leather lounge style seating and restaurant style tables and chairs. There’s also a small number of sleep pods. Six I think.

There was a small business centre. Some workstations with PCs.

The decor was pretty nice. All of the furniture was is in good condition. But certainly not luxury.

I should also mention that the lounge was super busy. Most of the seats were taken. There’s a lot of business passengers that fly from London to Germany. So a lot of people have access to the lounge. They probably need a bigger space!

If I’m honest, the Senator Lounge isn’t a First Class Lounge. Its really just a decent business class lounge. With good food, complimentary alcohol and your private space. There was no champagne or super premium spirits. No spa services. No dine on demand.

For comparison, read my review of the Etihad First Class Lounge in Abu Dhabi. They had al la carte menus, complimentary spa treatments and champagne.

The Food

I really liked the food offerings in the Lufthansa Senator Lounge. There was a large buffet with the following options.

  • Sauerkraut
  • Veggie pasta
  • Pork
  • Cream of vegetables
  • German breads and pretzels
  • Sandwiches
  • Gummy bears
  • Cakes
  • Cold cuts

I didn’t eat anything as I wasn’t hungry. However, all of the food looked to be fresh and well made.

I liked the selection of pretzel and breads. Germans love their bread, so it’s good that they offer authentic food.

I should point out that the food offering was virtually identical to the Lufthansa Business Lounge next door. My review of that lounge is here. They obviously share a kitchen. But come on! The Senator Lounge is meant to provide an upgraded experience. They should have had a couple of exclusive dishes for the Senator Lounge!

The Drinks

The drinks offering at the Lufthansa Senator Lounge was good. Just note that the offering is what I would expect from a business class lounge. Not a First Class Lounge.

The main buffet had a coffee machine and a Twinings tea selection. I had a chamomile tea to start off with. It was refreshing.

The alcohol was self pour from the buffet. They had German beer on tap, UK beers, wine, Prosecco and spirits. This is a good selection. The German wheat beer was a nice touch.

I was disappointed that there was no champagne. As a First Class lounge, they really should offer it.

I had a tiny glass of German wheat beer. It was nice. Very refreshing. I love German Wheat beer. So I was happy to have one.

There’s really no reason for me posting the below video. It’s just my favourite Lufthansa video of all time!

My Take on the Lufthansa Senator Lounge

I had mixed feelings on the Lufthansa Senator Lounge. On one hand there’s a lot to like.

The food is good. There’s a wide variety of complimentary alcohol. The décor is also pretty nice.

However, the lounge markets itself as a level above the Business Class Lounge. it’s really not. It’s exactly the same as the Lufthansa Business Lounge next door.

I flew in Lufthansa Business Class from London to Frankfurt. Review here. I enjoyed my flight. I got a great price, and the flight had a complimentary bar. However, my veggie diner was awful. I guess it serves me right for being a vegetarian!
