I tried American Airlines Business Class—what's it like?

I flew in American Airlines Business Class from Los Angeles to London. On the Boeing 777. It was a 9 hour flight, so lots of time for me to enjoy the service. And write a great review - of course!

There was a lot to like. The reverse herringbone seat was spacious and reclines to a fully flat bed. The In Flight Entertainment had lots of options. There was also champagne on offer, in addition to a decent selection of alcohol.

On the flip side? The food was average.

I was excited to try American Airlines Business Class. I had previously flown in Delta One across the Atlantic. And was impressed. In some ways, the service was kinda similar. They both had a good seat and average food!

I liked my flight with American Business Class 777. It was a comfortable way to cross the Atlantic.

I made sure to take loads of photos for this review. Each photo can be clicked to open out the full slideshow. The article covers the following:

  • I take you around the American Airlines Business Class Cabin
  • I’ll show you the American Business Class Seats and the fully flat bed
  • I provide details of the meal service, which sadly disappointed
  • I cover the drinks service, which was better!
  • Finally, I give my take on American Airlines Business Class

The Booking

My Favourite Activities in New York

New York is a global and iconic city. With many amazing things to do. Below are a couple of my favourites.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt Experience Tickets can be booked here. The largest skyscraper in MidTown Manhatten. The cost is $50. Experience is rated 5* from over 5,000 reviews.

If you plan on sightseeing, then consider the New York CityPASS. Buy it here for $150. You can visit five sights including Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty and more. If you plan on visiting these attractions, then the pass is worth it. As it’s much cheaper than buying tickets separately.

The Cabin

The American International Business class cabin was large. There were 11 rows, with four seats across. So 44 seats in total.

Every seat has aisle access. Every seat reclines to a fully flat bed.

I liked the cabin. You can do a lot worse in business class. I reviewed British Airways Business Class and sat in their older seat. Which has eight seats across each row!

The Seat

So what about the American Business Class Seats? The seats are large and spacious. A thumbs up from me!

The American Business Class Seats are reverse herringbone style. With four seats in each row. I was in seat 14G. In the centre aisle. My seat was angled towards the centre. Facing away from the aisle.

This type of seat is one of the most popular business class seats. Air France have a similar seat on their business class. My review of their business class is here. I really enjoyed the Air France Flight. That review was my first business class review for this blog! When I was still young and good looking! (ok I was never good looking..)

A couple of things to note about the American Business Class seats. There’s no privacy door between you and the aisle. There’s also no privacy divider between you and the other person in the centre aisle. My daughter was sat behind me, so the other person in the centre aisle was a stranger.

I would frequently had awkward glances with the guy in the other centre seat. It wasn’t a big deal for me, but I don’t think he liked it!

There was a TV screen at the front of the seat. It was pretty small. And you had to click a button to pop the screen out if the wall, in order to see it.

There’s a cubby hole at the front of the seat. You can put your feet here, when the seat is flattened to a bed.

There were a couple of small storage areas. There was one next to my feet. It stored some slippers. I’m a big fan of slippers
on an aircraft. Going to the bathroom in your socks is disgusting. Airline bathroom floors are basically a puddle of urine. Sorry for the visual! I explain more about this in my article - Life After Business Class?! 10 things you notice about flying coach!

Back to American Airlines Business Class! There was also a storage area next to my head, in the centre of the cabin. Which held the headphones.

The Bed

The American Business Class Seats recline to a fully flat bed. It was a night time flight, so I tried to maximise my sleep.

I laid down for about 4/5 hours. I didn’t get to sleep properly. I never do on a flight. But I got some rest.

The bed was firm and had more than enough space for me. The bedding was a duvet and a pillow. Which were perfectly acceptable.

For comparison British Airways have luxury bedding by the White Company in their business class. My review of British Airways New business class is here. British Airways are partners of American Airlines. British Airways and American Airlines both charge a premium to fly with them. So I think American could do better here.

The Food

The Food was probably the weakest part of American’s International Business Class. I’ve seen this mentioned by other bloggers too. However, I’m vegetarian, so I’m used to this by now!

The main meal service started one hour after take-off. The starter was a salad. The main meal was a choice of:

  • Short Rib
  • Crusted Salmon
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Ravioli

I had pre ordered a veggie meal. So my meal service was different.

My starter was two salads. One was a garden salad. The other salad had quinoa and asparagus. There were also some strawberries, a chocolate chip cookie and a hot roll. The starter wasn’t bad.

The main meal was bad and flavourless. It was corn grits, boiled carrots and buckwheat. The carrots tasted like they came out of a tin.

For dessert, they had the Ice Cream Sundae. This is American Airlines Speciality, so I was excited to try it. I had mine served with Butterscotch, nuts and cream. It was mid! Maybe I shouldn’t have hyped it up in my mind!

The 2nd meal was breakfast. There was a choice of two meals. American Breakfast or a fresh fruit bowl with yoghurt and granola.

As my meal was a special one, it was neither of the above options. It wasn’t very good either. There was a small bowl of fresh fruit, which was nice. Melon, orange and a strawberry. There was a warm scone, which I couldn’t finish.

My main dish was potatoes, kidney beans and boiled spinach. It was all pretty terrible. I ate the boiled spinach as it is healthy. I couldn’t take down the potatoes or kidney beans. Which were utterly flavourless.

I find that international airlines have better food than American ones. I really enjoyed my food, when I flew with Virgin Atlantic Business Class. Although that was when I still ate meat! Virgin Atlantic are partners with Delta Airlines too. So you can book using Delta SkyMiles.

The Drinks

The drinks service on American Business Class 777 was really good. All alcohol was complimentary.

There were beers, wines and a variety of liquors. They also offered a glass of champagne, when I got onboard.

I accepted, obviously! It was served in a little plastic cup. The champagne was good. I’d already drank a couple of drinks in the lounge, so I didn’t touch any alcohol after that.

They had a tea selection from Bigelow. Which is a pretty average brand.

They also had coffee and a range of soft drinks.

I had a chamomile tea. Which was served with warm mixed nuts. The nuts were lovely. The chamomile tea was decent.

I had an English Breakfast tea with my ice cream sundae. I was reminded why I never order tea in the US! The water was lukewarm. The milk came from a packet that sprayed everywhere. I couldn’t drink the tea and gave it back to the cabin crew.

With my breakfast, I didn’t risk taking a cup of tea. So I had a black coffee. It was drip coffee and was perfectly decent.

My terrible tea is below.

The In Flight Entertainment

American International Business Class have a TV screen at the back of the seat in front. But it’s at a weird angle, so you can’t see it properly. To view the screen, you need to press a button and have the screen pop out.

There were a wide variety of options. Including options in English, Spanish, Korean, Hindi and much more.

The headphones were by Bang and Olufsen. Which is a super premium brand. The cheapest headphones come in at $500. They were amazing! I didn’t hear anything else when I had the headphones on.

I didn’t watch anything however. I was tired as hell and wanted to sleep.

My daughter did watch TV. She spent an hour watching cartoons.

I found the TV screen to be a little unresponsive, with the touch screen. The TV screen was definitely dated.

Because the TV screen pops out to use it, you’re not allowed to watch TV during take off and landing. You have to put the TV back to the seat in front. In theory, if you pop the TV out, it could smack you in the face during landing. Frankly, if you are stupid enough to get smacked in the face with a TV screen, then you probably deserve it!

The Amenity Kit

American International Business Class have a basic amenity kit in a small blue wash bag. There was an eye patch, ear plugs, hand lotion, lip balm and a toothbrush.

Back in the 1990s, they would provide kits like this in economy!

My Take on American Airlines Business Class

I enjoyed my flight on American Business Class 777. The American Business Class Seats all have aisle access. The seat also reclines to a fully flat bed.

American had a decent alcohol selection too, including champagne.

The food wasn’t good. However, I’m vegetarian, so I’m used to it! Even when I flew in Singapore Airlines First Class, the veggie food was poor! Everything else with Singapore Airlines was insane however. Their First Class is a 50 foot suite in the sky!
